Region
Whatever your interests,
the
Magaliesberg region has a host of places to go to and
things to do.
The farm on which the Centre is situated was right in the middle of
the Boer War action as the British advanced on Pretoria. If you are
interested in history, you may want to visit the graves in the
south-west of the estate, the uitspan field in the north where
early trekker settlers gathered for nagmaal, or gaze at the
White Stinkwood and Karee trees under which some locals believe are
buried the Kruger millions.
Lesedi Cultural
village, just across the Lanseria Road, offers an authentic
African experience. Enjoy a traditional meal of oxtail, lamb stew or
roast chicken with samp and beans, putu pap and rice while
enjoying the tribal dancing and festivities. Remember to ask about our
special deal with Lesedi. Enjoy the evening, and hop on our bus
to come back "home".
A little further away is Hartbeespoort village with the its snake
park, game sanctuaries, and quaint tourist venues that have blossomed
on either side of the Dam wall.
An hour's drive gets you to the magnificent Pilanesberg Game Reserve
and the
Sun City complex with the Palace of
the Lost City, the Valley of the Waves and, for the golfers, the
acclaimed Gary Player Country Club.
The world-famous
De Wildt
Cheetah Research Centre lies near Brits, about 20 minutes drive
by car from Alpha. The Institute breeds endangered species for
reintroduction to the wild and specialises in breeding the King
Cheetah. You can also see Wild Dogs and Vultures at the centre. Public
tours are conducted, and special conditions apply to young children. .
The World Heritage site,
The Cradle of Humankind,borders Alpha
Conference Centre. This is the home of the little hominid, Mrs Ples,
discovered by Professor Raymond Dart. The centre boasts world class
museum and information centre. Maropeng has amazing -
interactive! - exhibits, and from time to time, real fossils on
display.
The Magaliesberg mountain range flanks the area. These mountain are
some of the oldest in the world, and certainly have a unique beauty
with characteristic rounded crests.
The village of Magaliesburg is well worth a visit, with picturesque
tea gardens, walks and shopping opportunities.
The
Rhenosterspruit Nature Conservancy is the immediate
neighbour to Alpha Conference Centre. The Conservancy protects iron
age sites, sites of historical and cultural significance,
stromatalites (fossils), bat caves, and rare grasslands. Two private
game reserves, The
Oori and
Loosen's
are within the Conservancy borders.
For game viewing consider the short drive to the
Rhino and Lion Park. The Park
has vultures, lions and rhino.
For the golfer, the
Pecanwood Gof course is on the shores
of the Hartebeespoort Dam, and the newly developed
Blair
Atholl Estate is near the entrance to the Cradle of
Humankind.
